It is represented in almost 106 countries. District 82, which consists of Sri Lanka ans India, had been ranked as the World Number 1 District by Toastmasters International, USA. Last year Sri Lanka and India became a fully fledged District. The District Governor for District 82 for 2008 /09 was Arunasalam Balraj, DTM, who spearheaded the District to achieve this status for the second consecutive year. It is a remarkable feat especially considering the fact that this position was first time held by a Sri Lankan. It is a national honour. This position was closely contested by countries such as China, Middle East, UK, Malasiya and U.S.A.
Along with this prestigious award of being No One District in the World, two other awards for membership growth and club extension was presented to Arunasalam Balraj at the Toastmasters International Convention held in Connecticut, USA last month in front of a galaxy of distinguished Toastmasters from all over the world.
As you are aware, this movement is of immense value to the country, especially in shaping the future leaders of our country. The award is even more significant to Sri Lanka as this year has been declared "English as a Life Skill" by His Excellency the President. This would certainly create awareness amongst the public of this organization, which is committed to improve communication and leadership.
