Come join us to commemorate the centenary celebrations of Sivali Central College

Anthropologist Pandula Andegama, a prominent past pupil of Sivali Central College states as follows about the inception of Sivali:

At the dawn of the 20th century, Ratnapura had seen the take over of foreign missionaries which brought great peace of mind to those who treasured the Sinhala culture and Buddhism. The reason being that they had no way of educating their children in a Buddhist environment. This focused the attention of a few public spirited persons of the area who formed a voluntary organization. Tenakoon, Dambawinna, Gunasekara, Weragama, Eapatha Attygala were some of the efficient people who were in the organization.

In 1909, this organization started a Buddhist school named "Sivali" in a small house at Warakathota Road, Ratnapura following the example where at that time Buddhist schools were formed one by one in main cities like Colombo.

Therefore Sivali which started with 15 children now celebrates 100 years with a flock of three thousand students and thousands of past pupils. The Principals who took the lead during these hundred years are as follows: If not for the Attygala generation we would not have a Sivali today. In the 1920s at a time when Sivali continued with much difficulty and was about to be sold out, it was saved by Mr.A.C Artygala whom we remember with gratitude.

Due to the major floods in 1947 the school was badly damaged and it was the honourable Ciril Attygala the then M.P. and Deputy Minister of Health who bestowed a piece of land at Hiddallana to reconstruct the school. In 1951 Sir John Kotalawala, the then Minister of Public Works laid the foundation stone for the new building complex. The building was ceremoniously opened by Sir John Kotalawala himself as Minister of Public Works.

During the hundred years the achievements gained by the College are abundant and numerous scholars have been produced. The school which was a "C" grade up to 1937 was upgraded to an "A" grade school in 1938 by Dr. C.W W .Kannangara the then Minister of Education, who was known as the Father of Free Education.

There were swimming champions in the College though we had no swimming pool. Today most of the extra curricular activities are in par with international level due to the achievements of the seniors.
Recently our colleagues Pathmanadan Wijesundera, Chandimal Alexander , Kamal Sanjeewa brought awards to the country working on the footsteps of past Sivalians. At this celebration of centenary jubilee Sivalian Scientists, Politicians, Athletes, Engineers, Judges, Medical Professionals, Accountants, Businessmen and those engaged in different fields in Sri Lanka will be honoured.

With the guidance of the young and energetic Principal Mr. K.K.P. Ariyasinha, the staff, pupils, Colombo PPA, 74-84 PPA, 84-95 PPA, 96-2006 PPA, have joined hands to launch an educational fair beginning September 20 2009 to September 25. The celebration will commence invoking blessings on the honourable President of Sri Lanka, the Armed Forces, the civilians and those who departed in the war.

September 21 would be Rana Viru Day and we take this opportunity to invite all those who are at present in the armed forces and the police to contact us as we would like them to be present on this day.

September 22 to 25 would be Science Day, Dr.C.W.W. Kannangara Commemoration Day, Commerce Day and Heritage Day respectively. These Days are named thus in order to bring out the capabilities and talents of those present. We are happy to state that we have given an opportunity to students of other nearby schools to participate in these events in order to build up coordination with each other. Seminars will be conducted each day by prominent scholars; and pupils of the College and surrounding schools will stage a variety entertainment each day. Exhibition stalls will be held by the security forces, media, universities, higher educational institutes, Medical colleges, National Gems and Mines and Ceylon Tea Research Institute. The purpose of these stalls is to make available a variety of high quality goods at reasonable prices. Though the commemoration would be over on September 25 our aim is to save something for another hundred years. Therefore we hope to initiate a Building. Fund to erect a parapet wall around the school for safety.

As we do not meet each other to give you an opportunity to fulfill your obligations towards your school, we believe you would join hands with us in sending your contribution to People's Bank Ratnapura Branch, Account number 088 - 10012008789 "Sivali Siyawasa Udanaya.

As we would otherwise never be able to commemorate in our lifetime, do come and join us at this celebration of Sivali.
