Cosmic Rays rocking the ‘Country Scene’

Cosmic Rays, among Sri Lanka’s most versatile band and the country’s first Country & Western outfit, from next month has two weekly offerings which should attract country music lovers, far and wide.

From September, on every Thursday, the band will be playing at the Mixed Bar at Taj Samudra Hotel in an exclusive offering of country music which should whet the appetite of country fans.

On Saturdays, Cosmic Rays will be featured at the popular Breeze Bar of the Cinnamon Grand Colombo with the music being strictly country and western. Meanwhile on Mondays, the band will be playing at the Cinnamon Grand lobby offering a mix of standards, ballads, country, western, etc.

‘We will providing a whole range of music at the lobby while in other two locations it will be country and music for the country music lover’ said Tyronne Pieries, founder/leader of the 1980s band.

The band, a regular feature at the Country Road concerts since 1988 and a hit at the recent Gold FM country show, is the only band that has authentic country music instruments like the fiddle. Ravindra Weerawardhane plays fiddle and acoustic guitar providing that much needed ‘country twang’ to the band.

The other members are Tyronne (lead vocals), Sheridan Kuruppu (lead vocals), Roshan Perera (vocals/keyboard), Patrick Davidson (vocals/lead guitar), Dilhan Wisidagama (drums/vocals) and Nalaka de Silva (bass guitar/vocals).

Cosmic Rays has played on contract at a variety of hotels during its over 25 years in existence including the Intercontinental, Hilton, Ramada, Taj, Pegasus Reef, Holiday Inn (Muscat, Oman), Trans Asia among others. The band has also played at venues like Clancy’s, Royal Ceylon Golf Club, among others.
