Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Italy Hemantha Warnakulasuriya visited the city of Lucca recently. Accompanied by the President of ABV Energy Spa of Coselli, the Ambassador visited both Palazzo Orsetti and Palazzo Ducale, the headquarters of the City and Provincial.

The Ambassador and the Mayor of Lucca, Giovanni Pierami spoke of the close relationship between the two countries and between Lucca and Galle, Lucca having contributed significantly towards the reconstruction of the city of Galle, after the 2004 tsunami.

Today, with Sri Lanka facing another humanitarian emergency, with 300,000 IDPs in the north, an entreprenur Luca Marianetti committed both within his company and with the support of the city of Lucca, to provide funds for their rehabilitation.


The annual concert and award ceremony of the AWS Academy of English Language and Speech was held on July 18th at the Ramakrishna Mission Auditorium.

Over 300 prize winners representing 35 centres from different parts of the country received their awards.

Prof. W.M. Karunadasa, former Professor of International Relations, University of Colombo is seen here handing over several sets of books authored and published by him to Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama, Vice-Chancellor of University of Colombo at a book donation ceremony held at the Vice-Chancellor's Office in the presence of the Registrar, Librarian and Bursar of the University.


A donation of a much needed "High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)
Machine or Haemoglobin analyzing system was made recently to the National Thalassaemia Centre at the Teaching Hospital, Kurunegala, in response to their request. With the availability of the HPLC Machine, the tests to identify Thalassaemia can be done directly in the centre after doing Full Blood Count (FBC), in two hours, which procedure earlier used to take over a month.

With the machine now being available at Kurunegala, it will benefit the population of both Kurunegala and Puttalam and also the Central Province in the fight against Thalassaemia.

The funding for the machine and equipment of over Rs 5.8 million was made possible thanks to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, S.R. Weerasinghe of Japan, Rotary Districts 3230 India, 3220 Sri Lanka and the Rotary Clubs of Colombo Mid Town, Athugalpura and Colombo Regency.


Trade, Marketing Development, Co-operative and Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardena and Social Services and Social Welfare Minister Douglas Devananda opened a "Knowledge Centre" in Jaffna College recently.

The event was organized by the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICASL) in collaboration with Association of Accounting Technicians of Sri Lanka (AAT) to provide more facilities for higher education in the North under the development plan of Uthuru Wasanthaya. Twenty scholarships were also awarded to Jaffna students at this occasion.

President of ICASL, Nishan Fernando, CEO-Aruna Alwis, President of AAT-Hennayake Bandara, Dr. Arjuna Alwis, Principal of Jaffna College were among the distinguished guests.
