Fluid dance

By Natasha Fernandopulle

Having held a number of productions over the years, this time around, Kanthi Ranchigoda’s dance school of 28 years, Dance Works Centre, will be bringing the ocean alive along with hip hop, jazz and freestlye dance moves through ‘O’ Move It.

Audiences can discover the secrets of the ocean as well as explore its diversity and understand the magic and beauty of the ocean through her latest production. “The reason behind this theme is to give audiences something different,” Kanthi says of the ocean theme for the first part of the production. She also stated that every time she has had a show, the proceeds have been in aid of patients suffering from leprosy.

“Dancing has been my forte since I was five-years-old,” says Kanthi who learnt dancing under the guidance of Macks School of Dancing. She started on her exams and productions and later on trained under Crishanthi Nagendra who encouraged her to excel in her examinations and move on to Stage Productions like Coppelia and Nutcracker as well as modern jazz shows.

“The school has been doing a production once in two to three years,” Kanthi says. Following in her footsteps, her students who started off with her at a young age have gone on to further their dance education overseas.

“It’s been really fun,” says Shalini Samarasundera (18), who has been with Kanthi for around four years now, adding, “Aunty Kanthi is a lot of fun and she encourages you a lot.” And as for the show Shalini says, “There is a lot of variety, it is not the same old thing,” adding that her teacher has put in a lot of effort into making it a success, and Shalini hopes the audience will be wowed by the show. “The show brings out a typical ocean theme from seaweed to fish to the waves,” says Shalini. She will be dancing in both parts of the production and says that this year, apart from the usual jazz, hip hop and ballet moves there will be some Bollywood dances as well.

‘O’ Move It will go on boards at the Lionel Wendt Theatre on August 14, 15 and 16 at 7.15pm. Proceeds will be in aid of Surol. Call 2500573 for tickets or head over to the Dance Works Centre, 70A, Lauries Road, Colombo 4.

While the electronic media sponsors for this evening of dance are E FM and ETV, the digital media sponsor is The Colombo Spirit website. The print media sponsors will be The Sunday Times and The Daily Mirror.

Holiday Camp with the Revelations

The Revelations Academy of Performing Arts and Creativity are known to always give the best to those interested in learning and being part of the performing arts. Therefore, they have partnered with Cinnamon Grand, who conducted Santa’s work shop last December, to host the Holiday Workshop during this school break.

“The workshops will include singing, drama, speed reading as well as art for the smaller age groups,” says Sanjeev Jayaratnam one of the partners of The Revelations Academy, adding, “We will also be including cookery.” Cookery will be demonstrated and taught by some of the best chefs that Sri Lanka has to offer who are a part of the Cinnamon Grand team.

Workshops will be held on August 15 and 16 as well as on August 22 and 23 and will commence at 8.30am. Mr. Jayaratnam explained that most of the workshops will conclude within a day, whereas the younger age groups will have shorter programmes. “The main idea behind conducting these workshops is to give the children something to do during the holidays and to introduce them to subjects which are different and which they’ve not done.”

A subject like speed reading in fact is bound to help in terms of their studies, Mr. Jayaratnam says, adding “The workshops will not be just about having fun but also learning something new.”

While the artwork and concept is being handled by JWT. The electronic media sponsors for the Holiday Workshop will be YES FM and Channel One MTV, while the print media sponsors are The Daily Mirror and The Sunday Times.

The workshops will be limited to 25 students per age group, so book your self in soon and don’t miss out on this fun-filled Holiday Camp.

Ticket will be issued from August 10. For further details contact Sanjeev Jayaratnam on 0777 346 806 or Ishan de Lanerolle on 0777 510 455.
