For years, Sethsuva Ayurveda Hospital, earlier known as the ‘veda medura’ and now located in Batalanda, has helped cure diseases and ailments of thousands of people, most of whom had ‘given up on life’ finding no treatment for their illnesses. Last week, Sethsuva established its Colombo branch, in Skelton Gardens, Havelock Town.

“What is important or rather, special, is that we produce our own medicine,” says Dr. Sujeewa Vithanaga, the physician in charge of Sethsuva. He adds that herbs are hand picked, hand washed, dried and squeezed to obtain their natural goodness.

Pranajeewa oil is one of the most sought after medicines.

Having obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery from the University of Colombo, Dr. Vithanaga took over Sethsuva in 2005 with the demise of its founder, Dr. Ven. Waga Gnanaloka Thera. Dr. Vithanaga was also engaged in research relating to this ancient system of medicine.

“We provide treatment for conditions and diseases such as cancer, cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, strokes, arthritis, kidney ailments, asthma, premature aging, menstrual pain, eczema and a range of other conditions,” Dr. Vithanage says. Explaining the products and services offered at the hospital, Dr. Vithanage says that ‘pranajeewa oil’ is one of the most sought after. Obtained from ‘ola’ leaf inscriptions passed down from generations and made using over 200 herbs, this oral treatment boosts the body’s natural immune system and prevents ailments, diseases and other complications. He adds that it takes about four months for them to prepare this particular oil.

The Sethsuva Colombo branch also offers its customers body, face and head massages, warm oil and herbal massages, herbal water baths, herbal inhalation as well as foot massages.

However, Dr. Vithanaga stresses, all this is done only after consultation with the doctors at Sethsuva. “This is a hospital. It is not just a massage centre or spa. There are qualified doctors and no treatment is given before a patient is examined by a doctor here.”

The Sethsuva Colombo branch is a joint collaboration between Dr. Vithanaga and well-known peace activist Dr. Kumar Rupesinghe.

Dr. Rupesinghe, having recently received treatment from Dr. Vithanaga for a particular illness says that he wants to share the benefits of Ayurvedic medicine with others and also research the ancient form of medicine.
