Weighty title for civil servants with lightweight jobs

By H. M. K. Nissanka, Ragala

Since the present government came into power, the former title of Agricultural Administrator, or “Goviniyamaka”, has been changed to Agricultural Research and Production Assistant.

What do these so-called “assistants” actually do? Do they do any research? Do they produce anything? Are they qualified to carry this title?

Some of them have not even passed the GCE Ordinary Level examination. They are factotums of the ruling party MPs in the areas in which they work. Their duty is limited to going to the Divisional Officer’s once a week and signing the attendance book. The rest of the week they spend doing their own private business.

To call these people “research assistants” is an insult to genuine researchers and academics working at universities and other institutions.

It is high time the Ministry of Agriculture took action and restored the original title of these civil servants. They are stooges of MPs who are benefiting at state expense.
