Cyclone lost steam halfway

The cyclone that was expected to hit Sri Lanka last week and cause widespread damage passed without incident, causing at worst heavy rain and strong winds in some parts of the country.

Last weekend the Meteorological Department announced that a depression was developing over the Bay of Bengal, and that cyclonic conditions may be expected in the North, North Central and Eastern parts of Sri Lanka. However, the depression weakened, resulting in only a low-pressure storm.

The Met Department had issued periodic bad weather warnings, telling fishermen that seas would be rough and not favourable for fishing off the North and East coast. No cases of loss of life or damage to property as a result of the cyclonic conditions were reported from these areas.
