A sticker in time to save a child

An island-wide sticker campaign was organized by Child Abuse Prevention Sri Lanka to mark International Child Abuse Prevention Day which fell on November 19.

The Colombo Rotary Club Down Town, in keeping with the theme “Make Dreams Real” by reducing child mortality joined hands with Child Abuse Prevention Sri Lanka by sponsoring the stickers for buses islandwide.

The stickers highlight the telephone numbers of the government agencies dedicated to preventing child abuse – The Child Helpline 1929 ( Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Empowerment) and the Police hotline 2 44 44 44 (the Bureau for the Prevention of Abuse of Children & Women’s Affairs). Both these agencies also undertook the distribution and pasting of the stickers in all buses islandwide.

The stickers will create much-needed awareness across the country, addressing not only victims, abusers, witnesses and survivors but also those in positions to influence such matters. Carefully designed to draw the attention of children, they carry a range of colourful pictures, covering areas such as physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse and neglect.

The campaign aims to mobilize the general public to action and in the long term help eradicate child abuse from our country.
