An inspired study of the self

By Myanthi Peiris

Every artist dips his brush in his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures -Henry Ward Beecher. An artist who simply draws inspiration from himself is how one could perhaps describe Pramith Geekiyanage. A student of the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, he graduated three months ago.

Pramith Geekiyanage

As a little boy he disliked painting but says he was pressurized to do so. Then realizing that he had a talent for it, he began to draw, and with time cultivated a desire to paint more and more.

Living in Chilaw, Pramith had his education at St. Mary’s and offered art as a subject both at the O/Level and A/Level examinations. Schooling completed, he moved to Colombo where he pursued a course of study that helped him to better his technique and style.

He explained to us the unusual technique that he adopts where he photographs himself from various angles, downloads the images onto his computer and finally makes the sketch. Asked if there was any artist or person who inspired him to paint, he says the Great Masters such as Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci most definitely had an impact on him, but that he draws the most amount of inspiration from himself.

“My paintings often reflect my moods and my feelings at that very moment. So far I have focused only on self-portraits, maybe with time I will paint other things as well,” he says.

He favours earthy colours he says adding that he is not much of a fan of bright, vibrant hues. Pramith Geekiyanage’s paintings are now on display at the Paradise Road, Gallery Café. The exhibition which opened on November 28 will continue till December 17.
