Serving humanity through electronics

By Tahnee Hopman, Pix by Berty Mendis

Within the walls of the University of Moratuwa, an exciting journey takes place. It is an expedition to innovation – also known as Expose 2008 – the fourth in a series of annual exhibitions organized by the E-Club of the department of Electronics and Telecommunication, to be held from December 4–7 from 8am to 8pm at the University of Moratuwa.

Although at first it seemed like an event organized solely for the benefit of the techies out there, a walk through the labs of the University where the innovators busily worked on their exhibits, proved otherwise.
Of the completed exhibits, one which stood out was a sophisticated Fault Tolerant Railway Signal System – a far sight different to the system currently operating within the country.

The current system is hardware based and has to be operated manually. This innovation replaces the hardware with software and promises to be a far easier method of changing railway signals through a main control system.

Another was a phone reload machine with the capacity to reload any sum of money between Rs. 20 to Rs. 2000, into any phone using any network. All that needs to be done is a note inserted into the machine, the phone number entered, and the result is quick credit for anyone who needs to reload his or her phone in a hurry.

"One of the main objectives of the E-Club is that of serving humanity through electronics," stated Gayan Hettiarachchi, the President of the E-Club. "The club is completely driven by the students with a little direction from the staff, and identifies the subtle requirements of the demanding industry to train and motivate undergraduates to utilize technology to provide service to the society."

The club has also focussed on many other community service projects such as Light Up the World- a venture that provides solar panels, batteries and LED bulbs with the support of corporate partners, for identified rural areas which have no access to electricity and lighting.

"During the past few weeks through which we have been working extra hard towards the exhibition, we have thought of little else," commented Niren Neydorff, a member of the Organizing Committee, adding that given the success of the previous exhibitions, the organizers have taken the initiative to conduct this years exhibition on a larger scale, with a few additions to the schedule.

One of the highlights therefore, will be that of the first ever Expose – Techfest Nexusss – a robot competition, organized in collaboration with IIT Bombay, the largest technical university in the Asia-Pacific region.

Other events on the agenda include Inter and Intra University Competitions, exhibitions from other departments and schools, as well as stalls exhibits and stalls from the industry. The students will also be publishing a magazine, doing a television broadcast -– Expose TV, a radio broadcast – Expose FM (96.1 FM) and other seminars and workshops. Entrance to the exhibition is free.
