MP Mangala Samaraweera told parliament today that he has received several death threats since he began a weekly press briefing called, “Defence Watch”, to reveal the “real situation” about what was taking place on the battle front in the North.

The MP raised a privilege issue in this connection stating the threats are a “serious impediment to my rights as a member of parliament”.

MP Samaraweera also gave out two phone number from which he had received the calls. “I was asked to stop the briefing or face consequences”, he said.

Speaking on the budget debate the MP said that in the name of democracy he has to speak up on such issues.

“I maybe killed in a few days for saying what I have said, but at this time if democracy is to be gained, I have to speak out”, he said..
