Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa today defended his decision to introduce wide ranging regulations covering the licensing of private television broadcasting stations saying they are needed to bring about uniformity in the fast growing field.

“The same kind of rules must apply to all television stations and these regulations were introduced for this purpose,” the Minister told reporters at a press briefing.

Under the new regulations, television stations will be bound by numerous conditions if they are to obtain and retain a licence, including restrictions on what they broadcast.

He said that there have been many complaints received from members of the public against television stations and the regulations will empower an advisory council to look into them as well..
