Argument ensues in parliament over P. Chandrasekaran's comments
2008-10-22 17:03:50

A statement by Minister P. Chandrassekeran that his party fully supports South Indian politicians supporting Tamils in Sri Lanka sparked a heated argument in parliament today.

Minister Chandrasekeran said that they would fully support the South Indian politicians who have raised their voice on behalf of Tamils in Sri Lanka.

He said even if the LTTE is destroyed similar leaderships would enter continuing the ethnic conflict.

NFF parliamentary group leader, MP Wimal Weerawansa questioned how Minister Chandrasekeran could make such a statement while enjoying the benefits as a minister and it contradicts the Government’s stance and the present military operation.

He said if Minister Chandrasekeran wrote to South Indian politicians raising their efforts as a minister, it would be that the government agrees with the minister.

Chief government whip, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that it is the stance of his political party and made a statement as the leader of his party.

Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said that the Government stance is not the stance of Minister Chandrasekeran.
