India's star batsman Sachin Tendulkar today set a new record for the most runs scored by a player in Test cricket, breaking the record set by West Indies' Brian Lara.

Tendulkar, 35, scored the 15 extra runs he needed to overtake Lara's aggregate of 11,953 on day one of the second Test against Australia in Mohali. He hit the landmark runs off Peter Siddle.

Tendulkar accounts for a record 39 centuries in 152 Tests.

At tea, he was 13 not out. But after the break he returned to the field and hit Siddle's first ball for three down to third man. As the Australian fielders shook his hand, the crowd rose to applaud the champ.
