More than a friend

Ruwani Seimon - Remembering Aunty Ruwani on her b’day that fell on March 29

My Aunty, the ever smiling and fun loving person,
Knowing you was such a wonderful experience –
We laughed, had our fun and yet learnt a lot;
Each moment we spent was never wasted.

I was quite small when I met you first,
But since then you taught me a lot about life;
Strict yet loving you always were,
Can you believe we spent seven years so?

The jokes you cracked, the times you were mad at me,
The songs we sang and the times we spent together,
All these golden memories make me cry.
Why did it have to end this way?

You were not just my friend, I want you to know,
You were my favourite teacher, my second Mom,
My role model, my counsellor;
You will always be a special part of me.

A true fighter you were when it came to life,
“Never give up” was your credo;
Tell me why life has to be so harsh,
To make a person bear what they never wished for?

I have wept so much till I am left with no tears,
I know that you don’t want to see me so,
But how can I face each day with a smile
When I know you are no longer by my side?

I know that at least you will suffer no more,
And wherever you are, I hope you know
That I will always love you for who you were,
And always be with you in my dreams.

Aunty, we miss you loads.
May you rest in peace.

From your ever-loving, Dingi (Dayanga)

Remind me

Dear Aunty Ru, I wrote this for you,
Remind me I am still here,
Remind me of the things I once held dear,
Remind me that just as skies are blue
Life must go on without you.
Remind me to enjoy life,

Every moment on stage to smile,
Remind me that I am good
And can trust in myself.
Remind me that the sun is still shining
’Cos my world is full of clouds;
Help me to find the silver lining
I never found.

Help me remember that you are with me,
That I can face challenges
’Cos I remember that you loved me
And with love your hand reached out.
And last of all, Aunty,
Help me, please do,
And remember that I think of you
And still love you very much too.
