Paramitha reaches century

'Paramitha', a teledrama series based on 'Jathaka stories' will telecast its hundredth episode on Saturday, April 5. Directed by Thusitha de Silva and scripted by Somaweera Senanayake, the teledrama series was telecast uninterrupted for a hundred weeks.

To mark this important juncture, a book containing critical articles written by academics and writers will be launched on April 4 at the People's Bank auditorium. The books include fifteen articles written by Prof. Tissa Kariyawasam, Dr. D. B. Nihalsinghe, veteran journalists Gamini Weragama, Buddadasa Galappaththi.

‘Interestingly the compilations include an article written by a Catholic priest Fr. Sarath Hettiarachchi who had done PhD on Jathaka books director Thusitha said. And it is the first time that such a book is being published. Printing by Prem Dissanayake of FAST Ads, the book was published with sponsorship of People's Bank.

‘Jathaka book’ s not limited to any religion and the message shared through these stories is universal," he said. At the event on April 4 representatives of all the four major religions are to participate. In addition the artistes who joined to complete the teledram are to be felicitated. Speaking about the teledrama the director said, "We have won a considerable childrens' audience without any additional promotion. The rating has been proved with the researches we have conducted,".

In some schools there were requests made by teachers and principals to watch this series of teledrama. The stories that telecast were not changed but had adhered to the original Jathaka stories. Even though there are 550 stories in Jathaka book, after few more episodes the series is to the stopped.

"This is because it is practically impossible or hard to do some of the stories that we come across in the original Thusitha said. The teledrama was sponsored by People's Bank and the director was grateful to the state bank which supported this good cause.

The massive cast of 'Paramitha' include Henry Jayasena, Iranganie Serasinghe, Wijayaratne Warakagoda, Cyril Wickremage, Suminda Sirisena, G. R. Perera, Janaka Kumbukge, Nihal Fernando, Roshan Pilapitiya, Victor Ramanayake, Meena Kumari, Cletus Mendis, Kanchana Mendis, Bimal Jayakody and Rebecca Nirmalee.

The technical crew behind the drama are D. K. Leonard and G. Nandasena handling the camera, art direction Rohan Hewavitharana, Bathiya Dunusinghe and Chathurika Fonseka in editing, makeup Tharanga Rukmalwala and Rohana Weerasinghe directing the music. Veteran script writer Somaweera Senanayake wrote the script for the series.
