The 7th ‘Nanapiyasa’ library is now opened!

The Disaster Management Committee of the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association (SLGGA) started a library for the students of 'Pallangsena Kanishta Vidyalaya,' Negombo on February 2, 2008. It was declared open by Mrs. Shanta Jayalath, the Deputy Chief Commissioner of the SLGGA. This was the 7th library to be opened under the Disaster Management Committee's 'Nanapiyasa' library project, which was started in 2007.

The Disaster Management arm of the SLGGA was set up in the aftermath of the tsunami disaster, 2004.

The Committee initially concentrated on distributing dry rations, water, medicines, family starter packs, school starter packs, providing counselling and first aid to the affected in the Hambantota area. The Disaster Management branch today has gone on to projects focused on tsunami-affected women and children in the southern province.

Under Phase One of the 'Nanapiyasa' library project, six tsunami-affected school libraries were renovated, furnished, and re-stocked in Athgalamulla, Kambussawela, Godawanagoda, Marakolliya, Pollommaruwa, and Kudawella in the southern province.

The library opened in Pallangsena Kanishta Vidyalaya is the first of five libraries that are to be gifted to schools in Negombo under Phase Two of the 'Nanapiyasa' project. Books, educational equipment, library membership cards, etc valued at over Rs. 225,000/- were donated to the Pallangsena Kanishta Vidyalaya library to be used by the students of the school.
