Teachers to fall sick again

By Isuri Kaviratne

Teacher unions are planning to go on sick leave on March 4 as the Government has not yet rectified teachers’ salary anomalies, Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe said.

He said teachers would not be applying for A/L paper marking this year as well if the Government does not take any action to solve the salary anomaly issue by then.

“We will decide on further action according to the response we get from the Government”, he said. Meanwhile, 520 voluntary teachers in the North Western Province who have faced interviews for the post of teacher assistants, but still had not received their appointments, have started a fast from February 12 in front of the Education Ministry premises at Isurupaya in Battaramulla.

The fast which started in front of the Colombo Fort Railway Station on February 6 was shifted to Isurupaya due to lack of interest in the matter by the Government.
