Business leader slams state costs

A top business leader has slammed the high cost of government spending saying ministries should show some accountability with a scorecard.

“The President should have a scorecard for each ministry, to show what has been done and achieved in the past two years,” said Federation of Chambers of Commerce & Industry Sri Lanka President Nawaz Rajabdeen.

He said there was too much expenditure per ministry. “Spending money is okay as long as there are results to show. In this case, the money is being spent but there’s nothing to show,” he said adding that the government should bring in private sector management to run loss-making corporations where a large number of politicians are employed.

“Why should the Treasury fund these white elephants?” he asked, adding that these organizations can be turned around without subsidies if they are properly managed.
