The John Keells Social Responsibility Foundation recently signed an agreement with the University of Moratuwa to launch a scholarship scheme for students reading for an honours degree of Bachelor of Science in Transport and Logistics Management (BSc (T and LM) Hons.). The scholarship scheme was arranged by the Transportation Group of John Keells Holdings Ltd, the company said.

The programme consists of 26 scholarships which will be awarded in a scheme, being both need- and merit-based. The first year students will have access to a need-based scholarship while the second, third and fourth year students will benefit from a merit-based scholarship. The recipients of the scholarships will also be encouraged to follow their industrial placement period at JKH. JKH will also annually offer employment within the John Keells Group to at least five students who graduate from the BSc T&LM degree.

Speaking on behalf of John Keells Holdings Ltd, Romesh David, President, Transportation and IT Groups, said, “JKH is pleased to be associated with this programme at the University of Moratuwa. We have been actively supporting this programme through the sponsorship of its mentoring programme and English language training; and we felt that the time was right for us to make a greater contribution. While we try to be mindful of our social obligations towards education, we also appreciate the fact that this is a win-win situation for both the University and ourselves; for such a programme will groom undergraduates to eventually become leaders in the transportation sector.”

Prof. Saman Bandara, Head of the Department of Transport and Logistics Management, said they were delighted with this partnership with JKH and feel that it signals more opportunities for professionally qualified Sri Lankan youth in the areas of aviation, shipping, transport and supply chain management. “The field of transport and logistics is rapidly developing and providing our aspiring undergraduates with such scholarships will encourage more prospective students in the future and will positively contribute towards developing much needed resource base for the country,” he said.

The 4-year, undergraduate honours degree programme in Transport and Logistics Management (BSc (T&LM) Hons) at the University of Moratuwa began in 2006.

The programme of study was designed to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to equip undergraduate students to face the modern day challenges of a career in management with specialisation in the fields of Aviation, Shipping, Logistics and Supply Chain Management or Public Transport.
