Discover the groovy sounds of a jazz fiesta

The Colombo Jazz Festival now on at the Mount Lavinia Hotel Terrace is a rare treat for jazz enthusiasts, with performers of the calibre of the Dave O’ Higgins jazz quartet flying down especially for the event. The spectacular ensemble of jazz groups includes others like the Southern Jazz Project, the Upula Madushanka Quintet, Natasha and Divya, the Ravi Bandu ensemble, 3RC and Lazer.

Dave is no stranger to the island. having been here three times before.“My time in Sri Lanka has always been great, the people here are friendly and we have been made to feel very welcome,” he says. “The last time we came here, we were extremely impressed with the local jazz music scene, but we have not had a taste of it recently, so we’re looking forward to our performances with these artistes.”

Jazz is an acquired taste. “It was not my first favourite; I went through many stages where my tastes and preferences changed. There was a point when I wanted to play in a heavy metal band!” recalled Dave. “But that’s how jazz is,” added Arnie Somogyi, the double bass player of the group. “Jazz music is something you have to discover for yourself; there are so many different styles, there is usually some exploring to do before you find a favourite.”

Thirteen years and nine albums later, having toured the world and played with the world’s best, including Frank Sinatra and Ray Charles, Dave and his band look forward to getting a further taste of Sri Lankan jazz. Tickets for the festival (on till the 11th) inclusive of dinner are priced at Rs. 1500, and are available at the Mount Lavinia Hotel, CR & FC, Café Lavinia and BMICH.
