Blunt or blank

When the President was told about the Blake affair, i.e. that the ambo may have been helping the Opposition in the numbers game in Parliament, he looked for Bogols but since he had left that night (19th), he asked the Secy to do the honours. Apparently, HE had been quite upset over the matter and had told Mr. Secy to be ‘very tough’ on the Ambo. But the Secy hardly takes a tough stance with two countries in particular. Bogols on the other hand, has a good rapport with the Ambo (e.g. when HE wanted his Iran visit ‘explained’ to the Americans, he asked Bogols to do the honours).

When Mr. Secy finally saw Mr. Ambo, the Ambo immediately has taken a strong view on the very constructive involvement of the US administration on matters of utmost concern to the GoSL. Before our man Secy could fire away, Ambo threw in the TRO ban by the US , supply of naval/radar equipment to the SLN in Trinco, ACSA, supply of some other military hardware etc. He had added that if the USG wanted to ‘destabilize’ the MR regime, he, as the USG rep here, could have easily deferred/delayed some of the above which would have certainly not helped the GoSL. As the going became tougher for Secy, he had softened himself up and just ended the episode by having a ‘friendly’ chat on the Christmas break and other mundane stuff.

What happened at this ‘demarche’ had reached HE's ears when he was in Teheran, where he was learnt to have said something to the effect like, “May oya katha karaddi, tikak pana athiwa kiyanna epai. Ara American karaya German karaya wage, evunnta kiyanna thiyena day kelinnma kiyanna onay. Aney man danne ne”. The discussion ended there.
