Invasive plant a danger

By Sujeewa Edirisnghe

A wild plant belonging to the Mana variety called Ginigirassa is invading parts of the Central Province but no one seems to be concerned about the danger the plant poses to the bio-diversity of the region.

The plant has invaded areas of the Matale and Nuwara Eliya districts. As the plant’s flowers bloom profusely and get carried by the wind, the growth multiplies and with it there is a danger of some insects like ticks breeding. Residents say it is time that authorities awoke to the danger and arrest its growth lest the whole province becomes covered by this menace.
