Don’t wait for state to rectify our wrongs!

The Sunday Times editorial of November 11 was sober and well to the point. No one has the right to make a nuisance of himself to others in the practice of his religion and it is most unfortunate that the Supreme Court had to intervene to regulate the conduct of citizens and issue directives as to how one should practise one’s religion, something that must be obvious to anyone claiming to profess his religion.

However, to put the record straight it must be said that the Buddhists of this country were always tolerant and showed a lot of patience and they only started with their loudspeakers long after the Christians started tolling their church bells and Muslims thereafter started with their Azan without any basis in religion.

There are still many other practices in all religions which cause annoyance to others and I hope a critical analysis will be made and these rectified without the state having to intervene.
