Political punch up at dinner dance

An annual well attended dinner dance at a Colombo club witnessed ugly scenes on Friday when a deputy minister allegedly punched the husband of an opposition politician.

Eyewitnesses said that more than 300 guests were attending the function when the deputy minister who had crossed over early this year to join the Government had allegedly assaulted the opposition politician’s husband.

The politician’s husband had become unconscious and eventually been taken away for medical treatment. The politician who was not a member of the club had been invited there by a guest. The incident spoiled the atmosphere of the event, but the dance continued into the early hours.
