Readers should not be taken for a ride - Letter

By Sarath Fernando

This refers to the two letters on the TOP TEN published in the financial Times. I totally agree with the writers that it is not simply correct to have Distilleries as the NO 1 Company in the country. Yes, criteria, like CSR, good employer, good governance, board quality, product quality, ethics should be taken into consideration. Looking at the popular business publication, I realised was full of advertisements from those companies on the listing.

Obviously if the selection is done by the owner of the magazine and his writers what do you expect? I would like to know whether the owner of the publication is professionally qualified and also whether the persons who did the selection are people of some standing in the corporate sector. Are they people who are held in high esteem and holding top jobs where people can rely on their judgment? If the answer is " no ", then the rankings should not get any space in future. Please ask these questions, because they operate in the public space and they influence our thinking and decisions. Readers should not be taken as fools to promote the well wishers of the magazine who keep the company in business.
