NIBM embarks on a major expansion drive

The National Institute of Business Management (NIBM), has embarked on a major expansion drive at the regional level to provide rural youth with education and training opportunities that match the workforce demands of an increasingly public and private sector driven economy .

Director General of NIBM, Dr E. A. Weerasinghe said the institution was fully geared to improve the professional competence of youth in the field of business management enabling them to perform efficiently and effectively at work places.

He said the main intension of the institution was to mould a disciplined and well trained youth capable of serving the country. The Institute has already set up regional centres in Kandy, Kurunegala and another centre in Galle is to be set up shortly. The new buildings are being constructed at a cost of around Rs. 370 million.

“The stability of being a government institute with offering recognised qualifications at a reasonable cost are being offered to those who are employed as well as school leavers,” he said .

NIBM offers a wide range of management training courses and 6 degree programmes for school leavers in collaboration with University of Northumbria, United Kingdom and University College Dublin, Ireland

Dr Weerasinghe added that the institute’s aim was to transform NIBM into the best business education institute in the South Asian Region while obtaining local degree awarding status in the future.

He said measures were taken to change the out look and modernise the institute with two fully fledged computer laboratories economic research and language units to meet international standards while increasing the operational profit to Rs. 12 million from a profit loss of Rs. 16 million within a short period of one year.
