More Sri Lankan industries into cleaner production

By Bandula Sirimanna

Cleaner production concepts and practices are to be incorporated into the products and services of all sectors and activities of the country with public and private sector partnerships, inter-sectoral co-operation and widespread stakeholder participation.

UNIDO and Norway have stepped in to assist Sri Lanka’s National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) to achieve development through sustainable consumption and production.

The centre plans to motivate all the industrialists in the island to become environmentally responsible efficient enterprises through cleaner production which enables them to compete with any competitor in the global market. NCPC Director V.R. Sena Peiris told The Sunday Times FT that his institution has worked with over 200 local industries and several of these industries have successfully implemented cleaner production concepts and practices to achieve economic and environmental benefits. The NCPC has helped these industries to reduce the consumption of raw material, water and energy to become environmentally responsible business enterprises.

NCPC is a project of UNIDO established under the Ministry of Industrial Development with the Norwegian government providing financial support. Peiris was speaking on the sidelines of a symposium on “Sustainable Consumption and Production in Sri Lanka” organised by the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL).
