Police beat

Kandy: A suspect allegedly involved in selling drugs to schoolboys is being sought by Kandy Police. Police said they had received information on the suspect from several drug peddlers who had been arrested in the past few weeks. Parents and school teachers had complained to the police that several students were addicted to drugs.

Peradeniya: A series of burglaries have been carried out by an organized gang in the area, but the suspects are yet to be nabbed, Peradeniya Police said. Police said some of the suspects are suspected to be Army deserters. Police investigators who have questioned several persons and taken in some people for questioning, are yet in the dark as they have not managed to make a breakthrough in the investigation.

Gampola: A suspect who is alleged to have stolen vehicles from several car rental firms in Colombo and sold them in Gampola has been arrested, Gampola police said. The suspect who is said to have US citizenship had allegedly been involved in the racket for nearly six months Last month alone he had allegedly sold five cars and a Montero jeep in the Gampola area.

Gampola Senior Superintendent of Police Ranjith Kasthuriratne told The Kandy Times that more suspects are to be arrested.“We are trying to trace the stolen vehicles,” he said.

Gampola: Nineteen persons have been arrested recently in connection with possessing gunpowder with a total value of Rs.1.1 million, Gampola police said. The gunpowder was found in a shop in the town which had been known for carrying out many illegal activities such as selling illicit liquor and meat. The shop owner was amongst the 17 men and two women who were arrested in the raid carried out by around 50 police officers. Gampola police are carrying out further investigations.

Hooch suppliers sought

Hasalaka: Several eating houses in the area are reportedly selling illicit liquor, Hasalaka police said. Police said they are looking out for the main culprits supplying this liquor.

Teldeniya: Last week six persons, including a woman, were detained during a cordon and search operation for not possessing their identity cards, Teldeniya police said. Police said they were identified as Tamil persons from the North and East and taken to the police station for interrogation. A motorcycle and a van used by the suspects were also taken into police custody.
