‘Man on the Moon’ at AC

Andy Kaufman, who died in 1984 at the age of 35, was considered one of the most innovative, eccentric and enigmatic performers of his time. A master at manipulating audiences, Kaufman could generate belly laughs, stony silence, tears or brawls. Whether inviting the audience out for milk and cookies or challenging women to inter-gender wrestling matches, he specialized in creating performances so real that even his close friends were never really sure where the real truth lay.

'Man on the Moon' (118 minutes) a biographical movie on this late comedian Andy Kaufman, along with his role on "Taxi," was famous for being the self-declared Intergender Wrestling Champion of the world. Directed by Milos Forman to the script of writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, the film will be screened at 6 pm on October 23, 2007 at the American Centre, Galle Road Colombo-3.

This award winning biopic portrays Kaufman (Jim Carrey) who went onto enjoy a career as lovable foreign car mechanic Latka Gravas on TV's "Taxi" and later gained infamy as an inter-gender wrestling champ. The film studies some of Kaufman's comedy antics as well as his personal life and his relationship with his manager George Shapiro, his best friend/partner Bob Zmuda and his girlfriend Lynne Margulies.

The film won international acclaim winning 3 awards and 15 nominations including a nomination for Golden Berlin Bear and won Silver Bear for the Best Director at Berlin International Film Festival- 2000 and Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture at Golden Globes, USA - 2000.
