CJ calls for an end to ‘this worthless war’

Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva

Chief Justice Sarath N Silva has said peace should be restored as soon as possible without allowing the public to suffer from the war.Speaking at the opening of the Northern Province Civil Appeal High Court in Vavuniya, Mr. Silva said he had seen a recent order for artillery ammunition to the value of US dollars 120 million.

“For what purpose is this ammunition used? To carry out attacks in our own country. This is used for military purposes. Against whom? What is the target? It is our own people, our own property”, he said, calling for an end to violence.

He said that for the past five years the Government had spent only US$. 20 million for the judiciary. The money spent for the import of ammunition was six times more than what was spent for the judiciary.“The war is worthless. Peace should be restored. People should not suffer from this war”, he said.
