Aksharaya: Censor board decision tomorrow

The Public Performances Control Board has to submit to the Supreme Court by tomorrow its decision on the fate of Ashoka Handagama’s film ‘Aksharaya’.

The Supreme Court ordered last Tuesday that the Board watch the film once more and give its decision to Court. Chief Justice Sarath N.Silva said the Court would make a suitable judgment after the Board informs the Court of its decision.

The Public Performances Control Board initially allowed the film to be screened but later on a directive of the Cultural Affairs Minister the film was withdrawn from cinema halls as it was deemed unsuitable to screen because of some of its contents.

The films director subsequently filed a fundamental rights petition in the Supreme Court saying the decision to withdraw the film was a violation of his fundamental rights.
