Dozing Kandy still manage a win

By Shon De Fry

Kandy SC 48
Army 14

Kandy SC waltzed their way to victory at Havelock Park yesterday, in their Caltex segment ‘A’ division ‘one’ rugby encounter against Army SC. the score card at the end read Kandy SC 48 points (4 goals and 4 tries) to Army SC 14 points (2 goals).

Kandy took the field in their immaculate white shirts and didn’t look like they wanted to get dirt on them. Army just had to ‘roll over and play dead’, forgot to read the script it seemed and did just the opposite. Kandy SC didn’t show any hints of good team play. They all just looked asleep, having a nice dream and refused to be woken. But Army SC never really managed to take the game away from the visitors; they just didn’t look like they had the class or the size to do it.

In the first half Kandy SC managed to sleep walk across the Army defence to score four goals and a try, three of them courtesy fly-half Sajith Malikarachchi which were converted by Nalaka Weerakkody.

Army did manage to catch the visitors nodding on the field, but just didn’t have the finish to complete the run with only inches between them and the try line. At the breather Kandy was comfortably leading 33 points to nil.

The second half was kicked off by Nalaka, and as the Army boys looked to the ball in the heavens, the crafty little Kandy winger Jabba ran across the line, caught the ball in flight and went over for a very impressive try.

Now feeling that the game was beyond Army, Kandy pulled out some of their big guns including Nalaka.

That left a few gaps in the nodding visitors which Army finally managed to capitalize on, planting the ball over the try line twice for goals.

The visiting ‘pro’ out fit didn’t want to take thing sitting down from that point, adopting a more aggressive play they went on to put ten more points on the board with two tries.

The aggressive nature of their game play was evident in the tackling and scrums, despite Sajith Malikarachchi getting ‘sin-binned’ (yellow card) by referee Jamaldeen for a dangerous high tackle the Kandy boys just crushed the Army morale that was dangling on a string at that point. Despite what the score card says at the long whistle, it should be made note that Kandy failed to plant the ball over the try line at least on five occasions simply because they looked to be asleep right throughout the match.
