Large crowd at Abeyweera funeral

The funeral of slain Eastern Province Chief Secretary Herath Abeyweera took place on Thursday amidst a large gathering at Balagollla, Kandy with civilians from areas where he served earlier calling over to pay their last respects.

Residents and Buddhist monks from Ampara where Mr. Herath served as the Government Agent before taking up the posting as the Eastern Province Chief Secretary were among those who assembled to pay their last respects.

Mr. Herath was gunned down at his office on Monday by a suspected LTTE cadre who entered his room on the pretext of getting a document signed.

Around 23 persons including three female labourers attached to the Provincial Secretariat are being detained for questioning in connection with the assassination, but no breakthrough has been made.
