Colombo city food safety programme

This programme is now strengthened to ensure food safety and this is to be backed by the Sri Lanka Association for Quality (SLAQ) under the National Food Safety Programme (NSFP), the association said in a press release.

With consumers becoming increasingly concerned over the cleanliness of food, the need to improve food safety in Colombo City was identified by the Chief Medical Officer of Health and a programme focusing on food inspection, food analysis, health education and law enforcement introduced and a certificate of commendation issued to many food outlets and restaurants.

This programme is now strengthened to ensure food safety and this is to be backed by the Sri Lanka Association for Quality (SLAQ) under the National Food Safety Programme (NSFP), the association said in a press release. It will identify those restaurants and hotels which could be used by consumers without fear of food safety.

They could be easily identified with the logo which will be clearly displayed in the advertising material, it said. This joint effort launched by the Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council and SLAQ is focused on upgrading food safety standards of the catering services operated within the CMC limits. It includes upgrading the facilities, training on food hygiene, developing hygiene (GMP) and food safety (HACCP) systems and training of inspectors.

A seminar to launch this project is to be held in Colombo on July 27 for 50 food handling originations.
