New BOI 300 Enterprise Programme factory at Hasalaka

A garment factory was reopened at Hasalaka, Mahiyangana by the Sumithra Group of companies with Navin Dissanayake, Minister of Investment Promotion, officially opening the facility.

In a press release issued by the BOI, Dissanayake spoke of the importance of the factory to the welfare of the people in the region. The plant had been originally opened by garment industry pioneer Kumar Devapura, but had recently been taken over by the Sumithra Group of Companies.

“We should strive to make our country like Singapore or Malaysia,” the minister said.

The factory is a project that comes under the 300 Enterprises Programme of the BOI. Under this scheme, the BOI encourages investors to set up a project in each one of the 300 Divisional Secretariats outside of Colombo and Gampaha.

The Sumithra Group is a pioneer investor whose first plant was set up in 1984. Today the Sumithra Group is a significant player in the garments industry, operating four factories in various parts of the country and providing employment to 2,700 workers.The group’s latest plant at Hasalaka is a state-of –the –art factory specializing in the manufacture of woven apparel. The factory specializes in the manufacture of trousers.
