The Beetles had the time of their lives

Pix and Text by Berty Mendis

If you are under the impression that the Beetles belong to the tribe of creepy crawlies you got a thing coming. Just imagine seeing over fifty Beetles in various shades and colours buzzing their way in a procession -What a wonderful world it would be?

That's just what happened. The VW Beetle Owners Club of Sri Lanka had their 8th annual 'Pride of Ownership" drive on the 25th of March.

They first converged at the Colombo Hilton Car Park until they were flagged off by Hilton's PR professional Gigi de Silva at 8.30 a.m. From there they wound through Kollupitiya, Duplication Road and joined the Galle Road at Wellawatte. From Wellawatte they went on a beeline to Katubedde and turned off to reach their final destination at the Dampe Village Hotel, Madapatha.

At the Hotel the participants once again crowded themselves into the A/C lounge just like any other Beetle while some others who wanted to brave the prevalent intense heat plunged into the Hotel pool quite unlike the normal Beetles. While the Mama Beetles and Papa Beetles were at their fellowship the kid beetles were engrossed in a drawing competition organized especially for them. At six-o-clock the mommy told daddy it’s time we go home to bed and all the Beetles were on their way.
