‘Silences of the Palace’

Moufida Tlatli's Tunisian film debut Silences of the Palace (Les Silences du Palais) will be screened on March 27 at 3 pm and March 28 at 6.30 pm at Alliance Francaise.

Starring Amel Hedhili , Hend Sabri and Najia Ouerghi Silences of the Palace in French with English subtitles, is an intricately sad work of art, examining the silences we carry within us, even when the exterior architecture has fallen away.

The pain of servitude, the power of music, and the need for women to stick together provide the underlying themes for this Tunisian-French drama set in the ruling king's compound the night before Tunisia declared its independence. The story reflects the reminiscence of Alia, a 25 year old woman who was raised in the royal palace with her mother, Khedija, a lifelong servant there.
