It’s today: Ever faithful Mavericks and something new

For the past 15 years, Dirk Maverick from Germany has always answered the call from the Country Music Foundation (CMF) to come and support the needy children of Sri Lanka.

“Country Roads concert? Sure Feizal, we’ll be there,” recalls CMF President and Founder Feizal Samath who said this was the immediate response, whenever Dirk was contacted for the Country Roads concert. The most important element in Dirk and the Mavericks’ visits to Sri Lanka was also that they care for the needy children here and have donated their services at all concerts at no cost.

Today’s Country Roads concert which kicks off at 7 p.m at the Mount Lavinia Hotel will see Dirk and his band (the Mavericks) playing for the 12th time.

The Mavericks is amongst the top country and western bands in Germany and has a wide repertoire of music. The band is led by Dirk Maverick Glassner who is the lead singer and plays accoustic guitar. On the current tour to Sri Lanka, the band which goes as Maverick & Friends – since all members of the Mavericks band are not touring Sri Lanka – comprises Dirk (vocals/guitar), Steve Bohn (vocals/bass guitar), Dietmar Waechtler, one of Germany’s best-known steel guitar players and Doris Gansen on vocals/harmony.The band has made many friends during their numerous visits to Sri Lanka and helped promote Sri Lanka overseas through TV, newspaper and radio interviews and also worked on UNICEF projects in Sri Lanka.

Over the years the Country Roads concerts have raised more than Rs. three million which have been utilised to build pre-schools, tube wells and provide books, tables/chairs and teaching material, amongst other activities.

The CMF has worked with UNICEF for many years and this year is working with Save the Children and Crysalis, a group of former UNICEF staffers involved in children’s projects.

Also appearing at this year’s 15th anniversary Country Roads concert are London-based folk singer Astrid Brooks, popular local bands Anno Domino (AD), Wildfire, the Country Revival Band and the Cosmic Rays. So be there tonight at the Mount Lavinia Hotel for a fun-filled evening of great music. Tickets priced at Rs. 1000, 750 and 500 are available at all Cargills Food City outlets and at the door.
