Will safeguard war widows’ future, assures Mahind

Every step would be taken to safeguard the future of war widows as the whole country is indebted to them, assured President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday during a ceremony at Temple Trees to mark International Women’s Day.

He stated that it was more important to do something meaningful to safeguard women’s rights rather than just carry placards and distribute pamphlets.

President Rajapaksa stressed the need of engaging women actively in political and social activities to make their voice heard in society.

He also pointed out that females working in the Middle East were bringing in a lot foreign exchange to the country and that the government had initiated a programme to raise their working standards and to safeguard them.
