Tantalizing Tat’ana

Here as guest of honour for the Rotary East show, Fashion Statement ‘07, the 18-year-old reigning Miss World shares her crowning moment and future plans

By Vidushi Seneviratne

Sri Lanka had the pleasure of hosting the most beautiful woman in the world over the weekend, as Tat'ana Kucharova, reigning Miss World, flew in for Fashion Statement '07, a spectacular fashion show and entertainment extravaganza organised by the Rotary Club of Colombo East, in association with the Sri Lanka Tourist Board.

Miss World was joined by four other reigning beauty queens from around the world, Natasha Suri – Femina Miss India, Amruta Patki – Femina Miss Earth, Isabelle Knispel – Miss Germany and Elisa Migatcheva – Miss Italy.

Miss World was guest of honour at the fashion show held at Water's Edge last night, the glamorous event featuring the creations of India's most renowned designers such as Satya Paul, J.J Valaya and Mandira Wirk. The show also had three Sri Lankan title holders in attendance, Miss Sri Lanka for Miss Universe - Jacqueline Fernandez, Miss Sri Lanka for Miss World - Danielle Kerkoven and former Miss Sri Lanka - Anarkali Akarsha.

Crowned Miss World at the pageant held in Poland last October, Tat'ana was the first Czech to win this prestigious title. Still in her final year at high school, the 18-year-old blonde hopes to enter university and pursue higher studies in diplomatic studies and international relations. "Actually it was a great opportunity for me to meet so many important people while in Sri Lanka, as they are all high profile individuals in this area," she said, speaking of her experience earlier on Friday when she was hosted to lunch, alongside a number of High Commissioners, Consuls and other dignitaries.

And what did she feel at that magnificent, crowning moment? "Well, for one I couldn't believe that I had won! I was at the pageant mainly to meet all these beautiful girls and enjoy myself. So it was just an unbelievable feeling. Also, I am the first contestant from the Czech Republic to win the title of Miss World, so that added to the excitement!" she said.

Coming from a family of three children, the support she has received from her parents and younger sisters had been tremendous, she said. "They've been great right throughout this long process, and will be there for me in the future as well." She hopes to use her title to work closely with underprivileged children.

Of her impressions of the island, "Since I have never visited Sri Lanka before, I was curious about its lifestyle and people. But the experience has been wonderful! Right from the moment we stepped into the country, everyone has been so warm and friendly. Unfortunately my visit is short, but I hope to definitely come back to Sri Lanka on holiday," she said smiling.

Fashion Statement 2007 organised by the Rotary Club of Colombo East had as its principal sponsor Brandix, while other sponsors were Celestial Towers, Galadari Hotel, Bullion Exchange, Air Sahara, Jetwing Travels, BMW, Aakshii and Mel Ads Ltd. The electronic media sponsors were Channel 1 MTV and Yes FM, while the print media sponsors were The Sunday Times, the Daily Mirror and the Hi Magazine.
