By Namal Pathirage

Finally it seems that the AASL is going ahead with the inquiry against Sri Lanka’s infamous female athlete Jani Chathurangi de Silva on dope charges. At a special general meeting of the AASL held on Friday, its General Secretary Maj. General Palitha Fernando revealed that he was in possession of a document that Jani had admitted taking the performance enhancing drug Nandrelone. Meanwhile AASL’s President Derwin Perera making a statement to The Sunday Times admitted that its secretary had made a statement to this regard and they intend going ahead with the inquiry against Jani Chathurangi de Silva.

The AASL President also revealed that the IAAF in reply to their query on the Jani case had written back to the effect that the AASL should go ahead with the inquiry under any circumstances.Earlier Dr. Ravindra Fernando who led the SAG medical unit inquiry against Jani Chathurangi pronounced that she had taken performance enhancing drugs, but, the head of the SAG disciplinary committee headed by President’s Counsel Wijedasa Rajapaksa cleared her off all such charges on a technical point.
It was also decided at this same meeting that in future 10% of all winning monies of local athletes would go to their respective coaches.

At this same meeting it was also decided that the next Annual General Meeting of the AASL would be held on March 29. The incumbent President Derwin Perera, former President Sunil Jayaweera and the present General Secretary Maj. General Palitha Fernando are expected to be in the run for the posts. They are in discussion to arrive at an amicable settlement prior to March 29.
