    A Poem for the week

The month of January

There are twelve months in a year, and we all know January is the first month. There is a long history of how the months got their names.

The first calendar was introduced to the world by Julius Caesar, 1600 years ago. Later Pope Gregory amended it. In Sinhala the first month is called Duruthu. Some call it Janeru.

The first day of this month is a festive day. Old Romans believed that there was a two-faced god named 'Janus,' and everything begins from him. The Romans worshipped this god. This god was in charge of the past and future. Therefore the Romans dedicated the first month to God Janus, and later it became January.

The Emperor Pompelius legalized this month as January. In the early days January had only 30 days. But later Julius Caesar emphasized that January should consist of 31 days. Today the whole world has accepted this and it has become a universal precept.

Someone

A soft knock on my front door,
A Pit-Pat sound on my door step,
A Hush-Hush whisper in the air,
I was sure there was someone just out there.

Who could it be, at this time of the day?
Will it be dangerous, or scary to see?
Hesitant, but determined to open the door,
For curiosity could hold me no more.

Slowly and cautiously, I opened the door,
Impatient to see who it was,
But, to my greatest annoyance, under the sun,
Sat my silly old cat, just having some fun!

What I like best in school

What I like best in school is going to the library. I love to read books.

We have so many books in our library. There are fairy tales, magic stories, adventure and folk tales.

I love to read stories written by Enid Blyton. I have read ‘Secret Seven’ and ‘Famous Five’ as well. I like to read Mr. Meddle stories because they are very funny.

We have a library period on Friday morning. If we don't bring the library book we have to stand outside. If we lose books we have to pay for them.

I'm waiting till Friday morning to go to the library. I'm planning to take ‘Treasure Island’ next Friday.

The magic balloons

"Help! Help!" someone called. Pip looked around and saw a spider in a puddle. Quickly remembering the story of the bird and the fly, he dropped a leaf. The fly thanked the little bird and flew off.

That night when Pip went to sleep he had a dream that the Merry Witch gave him magic balloons. When he awoke next morning Pip found some balloons tied to his bed with a note. It said, "Thank you for saving my pet Squabble. Here's a reward, some magic balloons. It will take you anywhere. From The Merry Witch."

Pip hurried out to show his best friend Pop. When he got there he found his friend crying. "Why are you crying?" asked Pip. "Because this morning Puss nearly caught me. I barely escaped but I broke my wings and cannot fly and play with you," said Pop. "Don't worry," said Pip. "I got these balloons as a reward. Tie them to your waist and you will float." "Thank you," said Pop. "You're the best friend ever."
