Golden Jubilee of Sithumina Vidyalaya

The Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Sithumina Vidyalaya, Bowalawatte, Kandy, commenced on July 6, 2006 with the opening of a Shrine Room and the installing of the new school name board by the Hon. Sarath Ekanayaka, Chief Minister of the Central Province, followed by chanting of Pirith and offering of a Pirikara to the Sangha.

On this day, the students, rich in heart but poor in resources, released a cow from the slaughterhouse and are now looking after it with love and care in the school premises.

They collected the money for the release of the cow from neighbours, friends and well-wishers by taking tills in the village.

Official ceremonies to mark the 50th Anniversary of the school will take place on October 2, 2006, at 8.00 a.m., with the inauguration of a two-day Educational and Agricultural Exhibition and a Felicitation of all those who have generously contributed towards the development of the school.

The school commenced on May 25, 1956 with 50 registered students. Mrs. R. Jayasinghe, the present principal of the school was appointed in February 2000.

The school has improved considerably in the last decade. The number of children has increased from about 80, five years ago, to around 180 today. It has classes from Grade One to Eleven. The premises are maintained neatly and the facilities for study and sports have improved

significantly. The school continues to be the centre for the development of the surrounding poor community with help from various organisations, institutions and well wishers. The greatest strength of the school is the enthusiastic and dedicated Principal and Staff.

The Principal and Staff have planned out several activities to be carried out before the end of the Jubilee year, December 2006.
