Splendid golf at the Ridgeways
Hemaka Amarasuriya, chairs Singer (Sri Lanka) Ltd. with success and distinction. A sportsman and enthusiastic follower of most competitive games, he has over a long period of time sponsored several sports activities with success projecting the image of Singer and its world renowned range of products, one of which is Hitachi, the pride of Japan.

Hitachi took over the sponsorship of an extremely successful golf competition at the Royal Colombo last Saturday, smartly organised and superbly put together, the contest was followed by cocktails and an elaborate Awards Ceremony. The ‘sew easy’ programme was outstanding.

Sheron Fernando, a strikingly good looking 6 handicapper comes good off and on. Tremendously talented, the young man struck great form at the Singer contest when he cracked a great nett 66 to pick the ‘A’ Classic, a Hitachi TV and massive applause at the Award Ceremony. Richard Gunewardena crept behind with nett 67 beating another brilliant youngster Avinesh Nareshkuma with a better back nine.

Nimal excels
Premier Pacific Nimal Perera, also known as ‘Pinnacle Perera’, was in topping form once again when he picked up a 4 under par nett 67 to win the Singer ‘B’ Classic. Strong off the tee and quite confident on the greens, he finished in a blaze of glory when he birdied the 18th. He celebrated incessantly. L.P.V. Jayaweera, a south paw, was moving pretty good when he faltered with a careless shot which cost him, the win.

Swastika Nihal
Nihal Ranasinghe, the dewdrop crack of dawn golfer, cruised to a well calculated splendid victory in Division ‘C, beating a lively contender Ajit Dissanayake by one stroke. It was Nihal’s first victory in competitive golf and that caused the young man to push for celebrating and volunteering to give shot by shot commentaries of his achievement. A glutton for celebrating, Ranasinghe started the evening at ‘After All’, his pal’s residence and after a skinfull, agreed to give a visiting dignitary Ian Chappell, the celebrated former cricket captain of Australia, a lift to the Cinnamon Grand. Moving recklessly in his Benz 350, the man was stopped by a posse of cops. Kalyani pleaded but no notice was taken until Chappell stepped in to be recognised by the senior cop, who not only got Chappell’s autograph but also waved Ranasinghe to move on with a warning.

Old folks
Joe Perera and ‘Amapola’ K.B.Ambanpola, struggled for supremacy when Joe got ahead with a stroke of luck to leave Ambanpola behind.

Masters
Pinnacle Nimal Perera captured this event with nett 67, beating L.P.V. Jayaweera on 69. Both happily celebrated.

Bala excels
P.R. Balaratnarajah performed splendidly in an exacting event. He shot the best score on the 4 par 3 holes to be cheered loudly at the Awards Ceremony. Beaming a smile of great pride and satisfaction, Bala cracked a few Carlsbergs with joy before he carried the great news home to his ever loving Beatrice.

Miscellaneous
In the ‘A’ Division, Nirmal Hettiaratchy struck absolute disaster with gross 96 and had Tissa Jayasinghe for company, who was as bad. Haris Serasinghe, crippled with jet-lag, messed around superbly to collect a rough century and laughs all the way to the clubhouse and mix at the 19th. Keith Martenstyn, Suranjan de Silva and Jit Wanigasekera made pretty packets of confetti.
