Central Province badminton
M.S. Fernando calls the tune at Katugastota

The Central province All Island Badminton Championship got underway at the St. Anthony’s College Gymnasium on Thursday. Dinuka Karunaratne and Thushara Edirisinghe have entered the quarter finals of the Men’s open event, and they have been joined by N.J. John and M.S Fernando.

The last names, M.S. Fernando, came back strongly after dropping the opening set, to dispose of his rival, Sembapperuma, in a three setter, the winner took the second set to love.

The women’s event features the national champion Chandrika de Silva and the runner up Thilini Jayasinghe. Men’s open pre quarter final: Thushara Edirisinghe bt. Gihan Rangana 15/7, 15/11, N.D. John bt.R.S. Dahanaike 15/9, 15/9, M.S. Fernando bt. I.C. Sembapperuma 8/15, 15/0, 15/10.

Dinuka Karunaratne received a walk over. The match between Hasitha Chanaka and Lasitha Menaka was tied at one set each.

Girl’s singles under-14: Sanduni Weerasinghe bt. Mindathri Dunuwille, P. Prabashwary bt. Chehara Lokugamhewa 11/0, 9/11, 11/3, Lekha Shehani bt. Gimanthi Ellikawela 11/4, 11/2, Chamika Madurawa bt. Thilini Gunatilleke 11/3, 11/4.

Boys singles under-14: Nuwan Hettiarachchi bt. M.A. Kumarasiri 15/0, 15/8, I. Gunasinghe bt. Chirantha Minimuthu 15/1, 15/7, K.P.K. Hettiarachchi bt. C. Tennekoon 17/14, 15/11.

Boys singles Under-16: Y.L. Subasinghe bt. Damith Ratnayake 17/16, 15/9, Nuwan Hettiarachchi bt. Amila Fernando 10/15, 15/8, 15/4, Udara Nayanajith bt. C. Liyanage 15/0, 15/9, Sankalpa Gunawardena bt. Y. Weerasuriya 15/4, 15/9, Dilshan Kariyawasam bt. S.P. Kumarasiri 15/13, 15/3.
