The power of sound
By Ayesha Inoon
A fusion of exciting young talent, an explosion of creativity, an event that will contribute to the betterment of society – Sound Eruption, a show organised by the Interact Club of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia promises to be all this, and more.

A part of a community service project done by the Interactors of STC, the show has been held consecutively for the past five years, with tremendous success. Revolution of Sounds in 2005, won the award for the Best Community Service Project, and was nominated for the Best Finance Project at the District Interact Assembly.

All proceeds from the show will go towards aid and charitable activities, like the setting up of health camps in rural areas, and the donation of clothes, stationery and medicine to those in need.

The night will feature a blend of traditional, classical and hip-hop dances and a variety of music from metal to classical to alternative, with the participation of eight bands and three dance groups. The main acts will be by well-known bands, Fusion, Burnout, JADA and Sylph. Charith, the drummer of Burnout, says that this will probably be one of their last gigs, as all the members of the band would soon have to follow various other commitments, and that they hope to give this show their very best. JADA, known as the ‘Villains of Variety,’ winners of Interact Talent Search 2003, and runners up of TNL Onstage 2004, also promises an exciting and novel performance. Shabeer, the lead vocalist of Sylph says, “This gig will be varied from punk rock to metal with special stage acts, and electrifying performances… so be there!” Four amateur bands, Carnage, Extension, Marlock and WDF, will also be making their debuts.

Dance groups from Bishop’s College, Ladies’ College and Visakha Vidyalaya will be performing as well, with Ladies’ College doing a traditional Hansa dance, Visakha Vidyalaya, a modern number, and Bishop’s College presenting a contemporary dance item.

The driving force behind this year’s event has been the committee of the Interact Club of STC – President, Gihan Benederagama, and Project Chairpersons Manesha Marambe and Kumud Herath in particular. “Organising and preparing for this show was a great experience,” says Manesha, adding, “we started organising three months back, and mainly focused in bringing together different aspects of dance and music together. With this concert I hope we’ll be able to achieve our main goal.” He says that everyone involved put in a lot of hard work and effort towards making this event a success.
Media sponsors for the show are YES FM and MTV, and it’s co-sponsored by APIIT, Union Assurance, Multilac, Blackberry and Sri Lanka Telecom.

Sound Eruption, a dazzling evening for young people looking for an exciting experience with the merging of the most versatile and exhilarating young talents in one spot, will take place tonight at 7.30 p.m. at the Bishop’s College Auditorium. The tickets, priced at Rs. 200 each, will be available at the entrance.
