Your own space
Bored with the look of your bedroom? Feel like it has nothing to do with your personality or your interests? Dhananjani Silva offers you a few ideas to liven things up

Think about it… for most teenagers, the bedroom is more than just a place to get a good night’s sleep; sometimes, it is their place of dwelling. So, the desire to convert their little abode into a country retreat, a beach, tomb of a Pharaoh, or even an Arabian tent is quite natural...

Mixing the modern with the classic, colours with texture, and glamour with practicality and creativity is all you have to do to make your dreams come true.

For guys and girls who are interested in creating that one of a kind, handy, little bedroom, we have provided the right type of hints to get started.

Designing a boy’s room
Racing cars
Draw black and white checkered flags and a finish line on the wall. Find a rug with a car track design.
Also a car bed might be fun. Or decorate the walls with a car wall appliqué. Add some framed calendar photos or posters of race cars, and put up narrow shelving to display car collections.

Space theme
Make a trip to the stars using a space theme. An Apollo bed set, outer space border, or a star-studded rocking chair might be just the items that inspire you to reach for the stars. Paint reflective planets or stars on the ceiling in arrangements of the constellations.

Sports
From soccer to baseball to football, sports is a theme that spans the generations. If it is a baseball theme, for example, use a headboard made from bats, hang curtains from bats used as curtain rods, make a baseball lamp, or hang shelving to display gloves, pennants, and trophies. Paint the room in the colours of your favourite team. Sports themed rugs, furniture, and beds are another possibility. Create similar looks for other sports, and you’ll have a room that is a big ‘hit’ with sports fans.

Wild colours
Go wild by starting with a lively area rug designed in fun colours. Take your cue from the rug for colours and designs for the rest of the room. Use colour everywhere! Paint every surface of a bookcase a different colour, and do the same with headboard slats, drawer fronts, and chair legs. Find a fabric to compliment the rug and use it to tie the room together with window valances or floor pillows.

Movie or cartoon characters
There is something for everyone in this theme! Whether your have been captivated by Mickey Mouse, Aladdin, Lion King, Toy Story, or Scooby Doo – you will probably be able to find bedding, lamps and other decorative items that use these themes. Towels for the bathroom and toys and ornaments will be easy to add.

Decorating a girl’s room
Sugar and spice
Select fabrics with flowers, cute animals or butterflies. You might stencil flowers, vines, and butterflies on walls as a colourful accent, using paint colours matched to your fabric or wallpaper choices. Don’t forget the soft, airy curtains for the windows.

Ocean
If you live near the beach, or just wish you did, create an ocean theme using watery blues for the wall, sand colors on the floor, and clouds in the sky (ceiling).

Stars
Starlight is a great theme, and you’ll find many fabrics, wallpapers, and bedding with star patterns.

This theme appeals to both boys and girls, and is available in many colours; bright and pastel. Wonderful theme pieces can be the ‘star’ in a room. You might get star-shaped rubber stamps (or sponges) and dip into wall paint to create your own star-border, decorate furniture, or make random stars all over the walls or ceiling. A star quilt or rug will complete the theme.

Moonlight
Create a wonderful, soft look with the light of the moon. The ceiling might be midnight blue, with painted moon and stars, or use some of the stick-on glow-in-the-dark stars.

Embellish a colourful painted bookshelf with crisp white stars, or liven up a plain white chest with a rainbow of star shapes. Find a moon and star quilt or fabric to use for window treatments.

Create a photo gallery
Decorate your wall with the photographs that you have taken with your family and friends and that will add some kind of personal touch to the room.
To make it look spacious...

Not much space in the room? Mirrors have the ability to create the illusion of space. The use of mirrors to cover the entire length of walls has the dramatic effect of making the room look so much bigger and spacious. Instead of seeing the wall, your mind is tricked into believing the space of the room is twice as big.

Pillows
Use of a number of colourful pillows of varied shapes and sizes to make the bedroom look more impressive. Make some pillows of solid colour. The other pillows should have a pattern of some sort. Take note of the size of the pillow before choosing a pattern.
