All Island Schools Track and Field Championships - 2005
Records tumble like nine pins on third day

Nine records tumbled on the third day of the All Island Schools Track and Field Championships held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. This accumulates to 19 records being in the four day meet which concludes today. The first day produced two records and in the second day eight new records were established.

It was originally stated that nine records were broken on the second day but officials said that this was a mistake in the Boys under 800m event which was later rectified and not deemed as a record.

Of the nine records established yesterday seven were in the track and two in field events. The first record to be set for the day was in the Girls under 19 400m final event where R.M.C. Subashani of Senanayake MMV Madampe of Wayamba Province who bettered her own record of 56.98 she made last year with a timing of 56.79.

W.K.L.A. Himali of Wewegama Kanishta Vidyalaya in Suriyawewa from the southern district recorded a timing of 4.45.56 secs. in the Girls under 17 1500m event bettering the record of 4.49.7 set by another girl from the Suriyawewa.

Another girl from Suriyawewa A.A. Nilanka Sanjeewani of Suriyawewa MMV set a new record in the under 21 1500m event with a timing of 4.43.24 to better the record of 4.44.42 set in 2003 by Nisanka Anurani of Sumana BV Ratnapura. In fact Nilanka Sanjeewani established two records at the same meet last in two other events. There was a record set in the Girls under 15 100m heats by Rashinsa Premashi Fernando of S. Lawrence Girls School Colombo who timed 13.02 secs to better the record of 13.04 set by a girl from Welimada MMV last year.

Gayani Mahaliyana of St Bridget’s Convent recorded a time of 15.60 secs in the Girls under 15 100m hurdles bettering the record of 16.05 secs set by Samanthika Perera of the same school last year. But Samanthika Perera of St Bridget’s Convent established a new record in the Girls under 17 100m hurdle event with a timing of 15.89. K. Chulani Chamika Ranaweera of Sujatha BV Matara also broke the record in the same event with a timing of 15.87. The duo bettered the timing of 15.94 set in 2000 by Lakshila Maduwanthi of Sumana BV Ratnapura.

H.S. Nadishan Fernando of Maris Stella Negombo established a new record in the Boys under 17 110m hurdles when he timed 14.79 secs to better the record of 14.94 seconds set by P.H. Hirantha Lakmal of Galle. The two records in the field events were both in the girls events where S.M. Ayesha Dilrukshi of Weerapokuna Vijitha MMV in the Kurunegala district did a throw of 34.48 to better the record of 34.06 set by Nisanka Anirani of Sumana BV Ratnapura in 1995.

The last record of the day was set by Dulanjali Kumari Ranasinghe of Devi Balika Colombo in the Girls under 17 high jump event when she crossed the bar with a 1.73 jump to better the record of 1.72 set by Lahiruni Madushani Peiris of the same school two years ago. She almost neared the national record of 1.75. Western Province are poised to take the major honours in the boys category while athletes from the Wayamba district are leading in the girls category. The championship will come to a close today with 34 finals to be held which will get underway from 10.30 a.m. onwards.
